Potter Wins 2026 WTCS Season Opener at Samarkand!

esmaspäev, 27. aprill 2026

CADEX triathlete Beth Potter kicked off her 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series campaign in top form, racing to victory at the first race in Uzbekistan.

The elite women's field of 42 faced blazing hot temperatures in Samarkand, a city steeped in ancient Silk Road history and making its debut on the WTCS circuit. Framed by the iconic Timurid architecture of Registan Square, it proved a dramatic backdrop for an equally dramatic race. The Olympic distance event (1.5km swim, 40km bike, and 10km run) served as the first of nine WTCS stops this year after the planned Abu Dhabi opener was postponed due to the conflict in the Middle East.

Following a strong swim that kept her in the hunt from the outset, Potter positioned herself well on the bike as Georgia Taylor-Brown launched a solo breakaway with two laps to go, arriving at T2 with a 34-second advantage. Potter, racing on her new Pinarello Dogma F race bike with a CADEX Max 50 WheelSystem and Aero tires, powered out of the transition in a chase pack including France’s Léonie Périault and Luxembourg’s Jeanne Lehair.

That set up a battle on the run. “I’ve been swimming and biking very well,” Potter said. “It was the run I was most scared of to be honest. I got very lucky—my teammate Jess Fullagar and I pulled turns together. I always thought we could catch them, because we could see them and we were motivated.”

On the hot, exposed 10km course, Potter and Périault went on to reel in Taylor-Brown. Once together, Potter surged with a decisive move in the closing stages that only Périault could attempt to follow. The Frenchwoman held on gamely but couldn’t match Potter’s finishing kick, crossing the line 9 seconds back. Lehair rounded out the podium in third, with Taylor-Brown fading to fourth.

Potter's winning run split of 33:36 was the fastest of the day. “I just went for it,” she said.

The result carries more weight than a single race win. Potter, who won the 2023 WTCS world title and finished third overall last year, now leads the 2026 standings with maximum points banked and a boost of confidence heading into the rest of the season. With three wins in her last four WTCS starts, she is clearly the woman to beat.

Top 10 for Cantero

In the men's race, Spaniard David Cantero—new to the CADEX lineup of triathletes this year—delivered a strong showing, finishing ninth overall. Cantero surged through the field in the closing stages of the run to earn the top-10 placing.
