Hookless rim technology is redefining modern wheel design and offers three clear advantages over traditional hooked rims:

  • Stronger, more durable rim walls
  • Lower overall weight
  • A more precise, reliable tire–rim interface

Now widely adopted for road and gravel, hookless construction—used across CADEX WheelSystems—delivers even greater gains when paired with advanced carbon engineering. The result are wheels that not only maximize strength and lightness, but also elevate performance, handling, and comfort.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HOOKED RIM AND A HOOKLESS RIM?

A traditional hooked rim features a small inward-facing lip, or “hook,” along the inside edge of each sidewall. This hook catches and holds the tire bead in place under pressure. While effective, the hook creates an inherent structural weak point in the rim, which has to be reinforced with additional material and adds weight.

Hookless rims remove this hook entirely. Instead, they rely on a precisely engineered straight sidewall and tightly controlled tire bead diameter to form a secure, airtight interface. When inflated, the tire bead presses firmly against the rim wall, locking in place through consistent pressure and friction. The smooth, continuous surface of a hookless sidewall makes the rim structure stronger, more uniform, and less prone to stress concentration—improving durability while eliminating excess material for a lighter, more robust design.

THE ADVANTAGES OF HOOKLESS

IMPROVED TIRE PERFORMANCE

Compared with traditional hooked rims, hookless rims usually offer a wider inner rim width. This allows a smaller, lighter tire to maintain the same air volume as a larger tire, creating a lighter overall wheel–tire system without compromising ride quality.

And because the weight savings happen at the rim—the rotating mass—they deliver a bigger impact on performance, especially in acceleration and climbing.

LOWER PRESSURE, BETTER RIDE QUALITY

Traditionally, hooked-rim wheels have called for higher pressures to hold the tire in place and to maintain speed and efficiency. Hookless rims paired with hookless-compatible tubeless tires make it possible to run lower pressures with greater safety. This comes from the precise tolerance—the exact dimensional match—between the rim bead, which is the corner of the inner rim wall, and the tire bead, the reinforced edge of the tire that locks into place against it. Combined with increased internal volume and stronger sidewall support, this secure interface ensures stability and control at lower pressures.

Lower pressure means:

  • Greater compliance: Tires mold to rough surfaces for better comfort and road vibrations are absorbed, not transmitted.
  • Reduced energy loss: Less rolling deflection improves efficiency, as you fight less to hold your line.

The payoff is a ride that feels faster and more composed—even on the roughest surface.

BETTER HANDLING

Hooked rims can force tires into a “lightbulb” shape, with a narrow base and bulging sidewalls. This shape flexes under load, reducing support and predictability in corners.

Hookless rims eliminate that issue by producing a more uniformly round tire profile, which offers two critical handling advantages:

  • Better grip: A rounder shape keeps more tread in contact with the road—both when upright and leaned over—for improved traction and confidence.
  • Stronger sidewall support: With less sidewall deflection, torsion decreases and you have more stability when cornering at speed

The result is precise, confident handling—whether sprinting in a crit or descending switchbacks at speed.

AERODYNAMIC ADVANTAGE

Traditional hooked rims can create a pinch point where the tire meets the rim, disrupting airflow and increasing drag.

Hookless rims, by contrast, create a more uniform interface between the tubeless tire and rim wall. This smoother transition reduces turbulence and promotes cleaner airflow, helping you maintain speed with less resistance.

ENHANCED DURABILITY

Removing the rim hook allows CADEX to use a more consistent carbon layup through the rim wall. Paired with a wider rim bead, this creates a stronger, more impact-resistant structure.

The result: a rim that stands up to real-world demands—from potholes and road debris to the cumulative stress of thousands of hard miles.

WHY CADEX HOOKLESS IS BETTER

From precision manufacturing to uncompromising safety standards, CADEX hookless rim technology is built to perform where it matters most. Every tire and wheel is developed to deliver secure fit, lasting durability, stable air retention, and real-world performance advantages under the toughest conditions.

TIRE TESTING PROTOCOLS

All CADEX hookless-compatible tires, along with select models from other leading brands, undergo a series of high-pressure safety protocols. These tests replicate extreme conditions to verify that tire and rim bead tolerances are precise enough to prevent blow-offs and guarantee a secure fit before a tire earns our approval.

HIGH AIR PRESSURE TEST

To simulate sudden pressure spikes caused by harsh impacts or heavy loads, each tire is inflated to 1.5 times 72.5 psi (5 bar) and left for 24 hours. The objective is simple: confirm that the bead remains fully seated on the rim without blowing off. Passing this test demonstrates that the interface between rim and tire is strong and consistent enough to withstand extreme conditions.

HIGH PRESSURE BRAKING TEST

We also test retention under aggressive braking forces. Tires are inflated to 1.2 times 72.5 psi / 5 bar and subjected to powerful braking that mimics high-speed stops. The requirement is exact: the tire must remain securely seated with no blow-off and no lateral movement greater than 3 millimeters.

SAFETY NOTE

CADEX test protocols are carried out in controlled environments to validate rim and tire compatibility. Riders should always follow the manufacturer’s stated maximum pressure guideline and never exceed it in real-world use.

CADEX WHEELSYSTEM TESTING PROTOCOLS

To ensure seamless integration and uncompromising performance, CADEX conducts additional system-level testing that is exclusive to CADEX hookless rims paired with CADEX tires. These evaluations go beyond individual tire assessments to verify that the entire WheelSystem performs as one cohesive unit, delivering the highest standard of safety and reliability.

TIRE & WHEEL FITMENT TEST

Fit is the foundation of safety and performance. Each CADEX tire is mounted by hand onto a CADEX hookless rim to confirm easy, tool-free installation and precise bead engagement. Only when the tire locks securely in place within the required tolerance does it advance to further testing.

SEAL INTEGRITY TEST

Tubeless reliability depends on a perfect seal. Every rim-and-tire pairing is checked to confirm airtight performance, ensuring stable pressure retention and easy, trouble-free setup in real-world use.

WEAR RESISTANCE & AIR RETENTION TEST

Performance must hold up over time. Tires are subjected to prolonged cycles of simulated riding to confirm they maintain consistent air pressure and retention, even after extended use. This ensures dependable performance long after the first ride.

JIS PUNCTURE TEST

Tire durability is validated through the JIS puncture test, an internationally recognized evaluation defined by the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS K6367). In this test, a sharp object is pressed into the tire tread at controlled force and speed to measure the resistance before puncture occurs. By applying this external benchmark, CADEX confirms that its tires deliver proven protection against punctures, verified by one of the most stringent global standards.
