Before transitioning to triathlon in 2017, Beth Potter was already a decorated athlete in track and field, representing Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Great Britain at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. It was after the Olympics in Brazil that Potter announced she would begin focusing on triathlon. Potter had the endurance base, but building the strength and skills to race her bike at an elite level came slowly. At the time the only cycling she had ever done was on a fixed gear commuter bike in London, where she worked full-time as a physics teacher. Her big breakthrough in triathlon came in 2019, when she won the European Championship in The Netherlands. Racing and training with CADEX WheelSystems and components, she is now focused on Triathlon World Cups and qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

How did you start in triathlon? After the 2016 Olympics in Rio, I realized that getting an Olympic medal in long-distance running was going to be extremely hard. I had a bit of a swimming background, but had never ridden a road bike. So I quit my full time job as a physics teacher in London, packed my bags and moved to Leeds to start life as a full-time triathlete.
What do you carry on a long ride? All the usual things – bars, water, sometimes homemade rice cakes. Sometimes a pump, otherwise hope someone else in the group has one!
Favorite place to trainLeeds, England, and sometimes La Nucia in Spain. We usually go out for a month or so in February to break up the winter.
