Groenewegen and the team had several chances to work on their leadouts and finishing tactics at the UCI Asia Tour race, and the early season wins showed they are on the right track. With all team riders on new CADEX WheelSystems, and some new faces on the squad this year including Groenewegen, they are already looking like a well-oiled machine in the sprints.
“It’s a really good start to the season,” said Groenewegen, who won stages 3 and 5 and took the red points jersey as well. “I was a little bit nervous before the first race of the season on a new team, but everyone has learned so fast and did a really good job.”
Groenewegen earned his first win with his new team on Stage 3 and then again showed off his impressive early season form in the final Stage 5. After a solid leadout from his teammates in the final stage, the 28-year-old blasted to the line to beat sprint rivals Daniel McLay and Davide Ballerini, who finished second and third respectively.
Groenewegen’s teammate Luka Mezgec, who finished second on Stage 4, helped deliver the Dutchman to the line, where he beat McLay and Ballerini to earn the win and cap a successful week of racing for the team.
