Blummenfelt chose Cozumel, Mexico, to make his Ironman debut. After winning the gold medal in Tokyo last summer, he began preparing to take on the full Ironman distance. Previously, the Norwegian had focused on sprint and Olympic distance events. In addition to his Olympic victory in Japan, Blummenfelt also won the 2021 World Triathlon Championship, which took place in Edmonton, Canada.

In Cozumel, the 27-year-old got off to a fast start, completing the swim at the front of the field, just 2 seconds behind leader Paul Schuster of Germany. From there, Blummenfelt broke things wide open with a dominating performance on the bike. Riding with a CADEX WheelSystem combo of a 4-Spoke Aero front wheel and a 65 rear wheel, along with CADEX Race tubeless tires, he blitzed the 112-mile distance in 4:02:40, by far the fastest bike split.

That set Blummenfelt up to run away with the win. Racing the marathon distance for the first time, the Norwegian was unstoppable on the 26.2-mile run, leaving the competition behind with a time of 2:35:24. His record-setting time pace gave him a winning margin of 15:23 over second-place finisher Ruedi Wild of Switzerland. Schuster finished third, 20:20 behind.
