It was once again a battle between Potter and her fellow British competitor and training partner Kate Waugh in the sprint distance event, which was the final World Triathlon Cup race of the year. The two had finished first and second respectively in Haeundae, and came into Tongyeong as favorites. Conditions were cooler in Tongyeong, located off the southern coast of Korea, with water temperatures at 19.3 degrees C for the 750-meter swim.
 
Potter and Waugh came out of the water first, hitting the 20km bike leg at the front of the field. The bike course featured three laps of a technical course with challenging climbs and descents. Potter, riding with a CADEX 65 rear wheel and CADEX 42 front wheel, along with CADEX Race tubeless tires, got a gap early and was joined by Waugh. The two rode at the front, ahead of a chase group including 2019 Tongyeong winner Sandra Dodet, Emile Morier of France, and Australian Emma Jackson.
 
The British duo worked up a 1-minute advantage, with Waugh hitting the 5km run about 10 seconds ahead of Potter. “No panic,” Potter said. “I know my strength and I know it’s better for me to close it gradually.”
 
Potter did just that, reeling in Waugh on the final lap and then surging past in the closing meters. “I stayed cool and worked the uphill, worked the downhill, and just had full momentum going past and I used that to full advantage,” Potter said.
 
Following the back-to-back wins, Potter now heads to Abu Dhabi next weekend for the final 2021 World Triathlon Championship Series event.
